Instructional Design Manager, Higher Education Programs
Minimum Qualifications
● Master’s degree in psychology, education, instructional design, or a related field
● 10+ years of progressive experience that includes co-creation of online instructional programs for higher education and people management
● Ability to apply principles of learning science to design and development of effective instructional programs
● Strong analysis, planning, and problem-solving agility
● Familiarity with accessibility standards
● Collaborate effectively with project management, instructors, and multimedia development team members throughout design, development, delivery, and evaluation phases of work
● Reviews work; provides actionable, positive, and constructive feedback; and mentors instructional designers
● Communicates clearly, concisely, and candidly in written and verbal forms
● Actively builds relationships with internal and external stakeholders
● Uses relevant software and tools (e.g., Microsoft and Google suites; Canvas and similar platforms; AI-assisted development tools) efficiently and effectively
General Description
The Instructional Design Manager, Higher Education Programs will lead a team responsible for the design and development of engaging, effective, and accessible online learning experiences for higher education clients. This position collaborates with faculty and other experts to design best-in-class academic and certification programs that prepare graduates for successful careers. This position oversees the development of video, interactions, quizzes, assignments, and other instructional materials. As a member of the instructional design and development management team, you will collaborate to define, refine, and innovate approaches to course design, work processes, and standards. In managing others, you will set clear performance expectations, provide regular feedback, and collaborate to support their performance and development. This is a full-time, exempt position (40 hours per week).
Duties and Responsibilities
Responsible for:
• Manage a team of instructional designers, setting clear performance expectations, providing regular feedback, and collaborating to support their performance and development.
• Approving direct reports’ performance and development goals and plans
• Creating products in line with quality standards and customers’ needs:
● Unit-level designs, which clearly articulate the learning objectives, structure, scope, approach, and assessment strategies for instructional units
● Feedback for subject matter experts, instructors, and guest presenters that balances their expert contributions with instructional effectiveness, online-learning logistics, and program requirements
● Instructional materials, practice, and assessments that align with program, course, and unit designs, accessibility standards, and instructional best practices
● Recommendations on strategies and processes to improve student engagement, instructional effectiveness, and development efficiency
Provide key contributions to these products:
● Program and course-level designs, which describe the overall purpose, learning objectives, scope, and approach for higher education programs
● Design and development plans: Collaborate with project management, instructional design, and multimedia development teams to define resources and scope of work required to develop instructional programs
● Project debrief: Collaborate with project management and project team members to discuss project effectiveness and continuously improve internal processes and products
● Program evaluation: Collaborate with instructors and program managers to evaluate effectiveness of instructional programs and recommend continuous improvements
● Work processes and products: Collaborate with relevant team members to define and continuously improve deliverables and work processes to ensure that we efficiently meet clients and learners’ needs and impact their results
Approves these products that others create:
● Drafts of learning materials, and other products of direct reports.
● Provide feedback and sign-off approval to ensure deliverables are instructionally sound and align with program design and team members’ development goals
