What is a Registered Behavior Technician (RBT)?

They are individuals with specific training in behavior analysis (training based on the RBT® Task List). Paraprofessionals who implement behavior change programs under the supervision of a qualified supervisor. RBTs assist Board Certified Assistant Behavior Analysts® (BCaBA®s) and Board Certified Behavior Analysts® (BCBA®s) in providing quality services to clients in various settings. RBTs are often critical to producing meaningful change in the lives of the clients and caregivers whom they serve.

Are There a Lot of RBTs?

  • More than 112,317 are currently registered as RBTs.
  • RBTs have provided services in more than 50 countries.
  • Published RBT exam pass rates data indicate that for first-time testers in 2021 who had taken the Florida Tech/ABA Technologies, Inc. 40-hour training had an 89.8% pass rate!

What Kind of Work Will I Do as an RBT?

RBTs work with a variety of individuals and in a range of settings. Their work includes assisting with and carrying out assessment protocols and behavior change procedures, collecting and graphing data, and reporting client-specific changes to supervisors. Their work impacts clients’ lives and those of their clients’ families, caregivers, and community!

How Much Money Does an RBT Make?

According to ZipRecruiter, as of Feb 7, 2022, the average annual pay for a Registered Behavioral Technician in the United States is $41,366 a year, approximately $19.89 an hour, $796/week, or $3,447/month.

What are RBT Certificate Requirements?

The Behavior Analyst Certification Board requires simple steps:

  • You are 18 or older and have completed high school (or a high school equivalent).
  • You have completed a 40-hour training that meets the BACB’s requirements. 
  • You have completed the RBT Competency Assessment with a certified individual. This will also be done on an ongoing basis to maintain the credential.
  • You pass a criminal background check.
