Psychotropic Medication and Problem Behavior: How Behavior Analysts can Influence Their Clients’ Medication Management Process

Working within the field of clinical behavior analysis includes working with clients that could be seeing multiple professionals for a variety of reasons. It is not always included in training, but it is important that behavior analysts have an understanding of the types of treatments their clients could be given from other health care professionals.
Board Certified Behavior Analysts and Psychotropic Medications: Overview and Considerations for Current Practices
Typically, the only psychotropic medication knowledge BCBA's have stems from a course they took in their graduate program or learning through their own experiences with clients. It can be difficult to assess the effects of medications on behavior if one does not know the possible common side effects to expect from certain drugs.
Conducting a Functional Analysis (FA) may seem intimidating and almost make you want to engage in avoidance behavior, trying every other solution before resorting to doing one. Dr. DeLeon addresses behaviors that are difficult to assess and how to assess them. In doing so, he expands on how to determine functions with different topographies of behavior, determining a function with multiple topographies, and how to graph data obtained from a functional analysis.
The behavior analyst is the team member who is best prepared to demonstrate a direct link between the behavior and the environment. This will reduce the likelihood that psychotropic medications will be incorrectly used to address operant processes. Thomas Freeman, MS, BCBA, LBA-NY, LBA-MA
