Reinforcement and its law was a major contributor to the advances made by behavior analysis. However, there is so much more that should be learned regarding contingencies. A better understanding of environmental factors of behavior has aided analysts in analyzing behavior as well as creating treatments for their clients. Antecedent events are just as important as consequences because they directly relate.

It is important to understand why the problem behavior occurs in the first place and then incorporate that understanding into the teaching of transferable communication toleration skills.  

One of the most essential skills children are taught regarding their verbal behavior is communicating their emotions. It may seem that when we first teach an emotion and ways to express it, the client may simply go through the motions. We must take advantage of the contingencies that occur naturally as well as the know-how to create opportunities to teach emotions.

As Karin Torsiello says, anger and aggression are to be expected in clinical practice and so it is important to learn and address these behaviors in the foster care population. Karin Torsiello discusses the expression of anger and aggression in children, where this may originate, the influence of trauma, and how to treat and manage anger and aggression. This presentation ends by offering tools and activities for providers to use or give to guardians of children to assist in managing anger and aggression. 

Listener skills are a primary focus of intervention for individuals with developmental disabilities. In this course, Dr. Laura Grow describes strategies for effectively teaching listener skills with a specific focus on conditional discrimination procedures. Dr. Grow begins this course by defining listener skills and then describes auditory-visual conditional discrimination contingencies as they appear in clinical settings.

Behavior analytic principles go beyond the standard clinical and organizational behavior change. In this course, Dr. Lattal compares the traditional and behavioral definitions of wisdom, reviews the goals of behavior analysis, and discusses how to teach wisdom. These topics are then combined to define the wisdom factor and how that affects behavior analytic practice.

Within certain areas of healthcare, it has been documented that treating clients with compassion and empathy can have important benefits, such as increasing patient satisfaction, enhancing treatment adherence, and improving clinical outcomes. Additionally, areas of psychology and mental health treatment have long recognized the value of the therapeutic relationship in treatment success. Behavior analysts have recently begun to articulate the importance of attending to relationships in our clinical work. For example, Taylor, LeBlanc, and Nosik (2019) proposed that engaging in compassionate and empathic responses with caregivers may enhance clients' clinical outcomes. Leblanc, Taylor, & Marchese (2019) proposed graduate programs incorporate training in these skills. This dynamic six-part webinar series will focus on emerging research in behavior analysis in building therapeutic relationships with caregivers, the skills to build these relationships, and strategies to strengthen these relationships over time. Video examples and activities will illustrate practical strategies for empathic, collaborative relationships with caregivers.

The podcast describes an activity for exploring the past influences in order to identify your values and design your actions as a supervisor. In addition, the listener is guided through an activity for identifying future development goals and seeking influencers and mentors to help them achieve those goals.

As behavior analysts, we currently must renew our certification every two years by gaining a number of BACB CEUs—either 20 for BCaBAs or 32 for BCBAs. It is true that many professionals often get preoccupied with the day-to-day tasks in front of them: the tasks that have more immediate consequences. If they do not have time to attend conferences, they often end up trying to accrue most, or all, of their required CEUs immediately before the due date to renew their certification (fixed-interval pattern of responding, anyone?).
